Australia offers different types of visas depending on your purpose of travel. Two of the most common are the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) and the Student Visa (Subclass 500). While they may seem similar, they serve very different goals.
1. Purpose of Travel
- Visitor Visa: Best for tourism, short visits, family meetings, or short-term courses (less than 3 months).
- Student Visa: Required for full-time study at an Australian educational institution.
2. Duration of Stay
- Visitor Visa: Usually valid for 3 to 12 months depending on your application.
- Student Visa: Valid for the entire duration of your course, often with an additional grace period.
3. Work Rights
- Visitor Visa: You cannot work while on a visitor visa.
- Student Visa: Allows part-time work (up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods) and full-time during holidays.
4. Cost and Application Process
- Visitor Visa: Generally faster and less expensive to apply for.
- Student Visa: Requires more documents, including a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), financial proof, and health insurance.
5. Pathway Opportunities
A student visa offers pathways to skilled migration or further study, while a visitor visa does not lead to long-term residency options.
